Gilbert James Berglund

April 30, 1923 — May 4, 2011

Gilbert James Berglund, 88, of Lewellen, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Ogallala Community Hospital in Ogallala.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2011 at United Methodist Church in Lewellen with Pastors Ray Weinerman and Clark Bates officiating. Burial will follow in the Ash Hollow Cemetery.

Cremation was held and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the family to be designated later.

Gilbert was born April 30, 1923 in Lewellen, Nebraska to Charlie and Ethel (Clark) Berglund. He grew up at Lewellen where he attended Garden County Schools. He attended one year at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

He entered the US Army on July 25, 1944. His service included deployment in the European Theatre.

On February 1, 1947 he was united in marriage to Doris Jean Copley at North Platte, Nebraska. They lived on the Vic Marsh place where he farmed until 1972 when he sold the farm and kept a small acreage where they presently live. He worked at Marshalltown Instruments and Midwec in Oshkosh after selling the farm until his retirement in 1988.

He enjoyed doing yardwork and spending time with his family. He was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church of Lewellen.

He leaves behind his wife; daughters, Jeanette and husband, Ray Walter of McCook, Nebraska, Joy Foster of Holdrege, Nebraska, and Jacki and husband, Rod McConkey of Arthur, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Pat Berglund; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son James in 2008; and one sister Betty Wilder of Grant, Alabama.
