Karen (Hixon) Van Winkle

October 14, 1949 — June 28, 2011

Karen (Hixon) VanWinkle, 61 of Pleasanton, Nebraska and a former Chappell resident died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at her home in Pleasanton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, July 2, 2011 in the Chappell United Methodist Church with Pastor Ezekiel Koech officiating. Burial will follow in the Chappell Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to Diabetes Foundation or the family.

Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Chappell with the family present from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Karen Rae VanWinkle, the daughter of Harry A. and Dorthy E. (David) Huffine was born October 14, 1949 at Holdrege, Nebraska. She lived in Holdrege until the 6th grade when the family moved to Chappell, Nebraska. She finished her schooling there, graduating from Chappell High School in 1967. After high school she attended x ray school.

On September 1, 1968 she was united in marriage to Leonard Hixon at Chappell. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1988.


Karen worked for the Sidney Medical Associates in Sidney, Nebraska for 13 years before she married Dennis VanWinkle on May 25, 2002 at Ogallala, Nebraska. They made their home in Pleasanton, Nebraska where she resided at the time of her death.

Karen was a member of the United Methodist Church of Chappell and Bridge club. Much of her time was spent with her craft talents. She tried to be at every grandchild’s event, nothing was more important than those grandkids. Karen also enjoyed keeping in touch with her special friends in Chappell.


Survivors include her husband Dennis of Pleasanton, NE; her son Chad and wife Marla Hixon of Chappell, NE; a sister Sharon Bonsack of Grand Island, NE; three stepsons: Todd and wife Kate VanWinkle of Ravenna, NE, Jeffrey and wife Heather VanWinkle of Silver Creek, NE and Darren and wife Paige VanWinkle of Kearney, NE; niece Lori and husband Phil Dibbern of Wood River, NE; nephew Jeff and wife Cyndi Hayes of Grand Island, NE and 14 Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband.
