Jim L. Jessen age 65 passed away on January 27, 2013 surrounded by his family at the home of his daughter, Summer Parker, and family in Scottsbluff, NE after a valiant fight with cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Lisco Presbyterian Church with overflow at the Lisco Legion Hall and Pastor Duane Dunwoody officiating. Private family scattering of the ashes will be held at a later date.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Jim was born to Rosella and Leo Jessen March 17, 1947 at the Oshkosh Hospital. He attended country school district 13 south of Oshkosh. He graduated Garden County High School- class of 1965. Jim was a member of FFA and achieved State Farmer. He was a strong advocate of having the FFA program returned to the Garden County school system. During his years at Garden County High School he played trumpet in the band, played football and basketball. Jim was confirmed and a member of the Berean Lutheran Church south of Oshkosh.
Jim graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Agribusiness from Colorado State University in May 1969, where he was a member of the Ag Fraternity, Alpha Gamma Rho, where he held several offices. Jim married Gwen Keas (McCormick) on September 21, 1969 at the Berean Lutheran church. Their life was later blessed with their three children – Stormy Layne, Summer Dawn and Mariah Jean.
Jim enlisted in the Air Force Reserves in 1970 and lived in Biloxi, Mississippi with his wife during his 6 month training- serving 6 years. Jim and Gwen made their first home in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming in 1971 on a ranch which became known as Muddy Creek Ranch where they began their lifelong pursuit in developing a high performance Simmental and Simmental cross cow herd with MCR Monarch 1D. Monarch was a four-way trait leader in the breed; excelling in calving ease. Jim was a member of the American Simmental Association and Wyoming and Nebraska Simmental Associations.
In December of 1979 Jim and Gwen purchased the Hannah ranch at Lisco, Nebraska moving their family in June of 1980. Jim spent years developing and growing the ranch by adding pivot irrigation and stock wells to improve grazing. He took great pride in his farm and ranch business. Jim was an active member of the Lisco Presbyterian Church and served on the Session Board.
Jim was an avid collector of Civil War coinage, stamps, paper money, bank notes and license plates. Attending antique auctions across the country became one of his favorite hobbies.
He was appointed in 2006 to serve on the Board of Directors for Mid America Bio Energy, LLC., Standard Ethanol, and an active member of the Risk Management Committee for Mid-America Agri Products/Wheatland, LLC in North Platte, Nebraska.
Jim spent time with his family attending his children’s school and 4-H events, family and friends at the lake house boating and jet skiing. He enjoyed playing cards, family vacations, traveling, and movies. He formed many friendships over the years through the hunting business. Jim loved spending time at the Riverview Lodge which he and Gwen built to accommodate local events and hunters in the Lisco area.
Jim is survived by his wife Gwen, daughter Summer (Anthony) Parker, grandson Chance, granddaughter Kianna; daughter Mariah Jessen; Morgan Pieper, grandsons Hunter Layne Pieper and Stormy Kase Jessen; Mother Rosella Jessen, brothers Terry Jessen (Diana) and Brian (Kim) Epp, and niece Chelsee Jessen; Mother –in-law Geraldine McCormick, brother-in-laws Byron (Betty) McCormick, Galen (Lois) Keas, sister-in-law Susan (Kent) Elmshaeuser. Long time friends Terry and Gwenn Sanders, Barry and Kris McVicker, Lana and Mike Behrends and Rhona Blake and family.
He will be greatly missed by his extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews along with his close “Bivouac” fraternity brothers John (Beverly) Kies, Pete (Kathy) Dernoeden, Paul (Lynda) Foster, Bill (Bonny) Day, Bill (Nancy) Chase and Ron (Hariette)Roadman and many friends that influenced his life and accomplishments.
Jim is preceded in death by his son Stormy Jessen, father Leo Jessen, his father-in-law Donald McCormick and brother Jerry Jessen.
