Elizabeth "Ibs" Young

July 10, 1935 — October 19, 2013

Elizabeth “Ibs” Young, 78 of Sidney, Nebraska, the owner of KSID Radio was diagnosed with metastatic ovarian cancer on September 27, 2013. She returned home on Hospice on October 3rd, and passed peacefully in her home on October 19, 2013 just before a beautiful sunrise, and with all of her children at her side.


Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, October 22, 2013 in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney with Father Bryan Ernest officiating.

There will be a visitation on Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with the family present.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cheyenne County Community Center Youth Sports Club, Sidney Regional Medical Center Hospice, or to the Ibs Schaffer Young Memorial Fund for disadvantaged youth at O’Neill Public Schools in O’Neill, Nebraska.

Elizabeth “Ibs” Schaffer Young was born July 10, 1935 in Stuart, Nebraska. She was the youngest of four children born to Dewey C. and Elizabeth Gribble Schaffer, long time Holt County ranchers. She attended country school until the family moved to town in O’Neill around the 6th grade. Ibs was a proud daughter of the Sandhills. She attended junior high and high school in O’Neill, graduating from O’Neill Public High School in 1953. She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where she majored in Physical Education and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. After her college graduation in 1957, she traveled to Alaska as a Presbyterian Missionary to Sheldon Jackson Junior College in Sitka.


Ibs returned to Nebraska in 1958 and was offered a teaching position at Sidney Public Schools. There she met David William Young and they were married on March 11, 1961. Dave and Ibs raised 4 children in Sidney. She was a past president of the Sidney School Board, a member of PEO chapter FR, served as an Elder of Light Memorial Presbyterian Church, was past president of the Cheyenne County Republican Party, past member of the UNMC Board of Counselors and past County Chairman of the Red Cross.

She is survived by her 4 children and their spouses: Elizabeth “Lib” and Delray Kumm of O’Neill; David and Julie Young of Tucson, Arizona; Susan “Suzy” and Jim Ernest of Dalton, and Barbara “Barbie” and Scott Gutshall of O’Neill. Thirteen grandchildren: Kelsey (Kumm) and husband Kyle Nodgaard of Evans, CO, Kailey Kumm of Lincoln, NE, Courtney Mock and husband Earle of Denver, CO; Whitney Young of Sidney; Alex Young of Tucson, AZ; Darby Young of Boston, MA; Jessica Ernest of Chadron; Katy and Jacob of Dalton; Shelby Gutshall of Norfolk; and Jackson, Aurora and Blair Gutshall of O’Neill and her sister Patricia Cook of O’Neill and brother Larry Schaffer and wife Lois also of O’Neill.
Ibs leaves behind many treasured friends and family, as well as her beloved miniature Schnauzer, Cricket.


She was preceded in death by her parents Dewey and Elizabeth (Gribble) Schaffer, husband David W. Young, granddaughter Samantha Jean Ernest, and sister Shirley Schaffer Walker.
