Shirley Bartling, 90, of Oshkosh passed away late Saturday evening, October 19, 2013 at the Garden County Health Services Nursing Home in Oshkosh.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 25, 2013 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Oshkosh with Pastor Sarah Cordray officiating. Burial will follow in the Oshkosh City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh.

A memorial has been established in Shirley’s name to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or to the Garden County Health Services Nursing Home.

Shirley Mae Saunders was born May 20, 1923 in Oshkosh, Nebraska, the third child of Ray and Leah (Holland) Saunders. She attended Oshkosh Grade School and Garden County High School graduating as class salutatorian in 1941. She had taken Normal Training in school and furthered her education at Kearney Teachers’ College. She taught in several rural schools in Garden and Cheyenne Counties. It was while teaching at Goodview School that she met Vernon Bartling and they were married September 29, 1946.

Vernon and Shirley lived on farms north of Lodgepole until 1961 when they moved to her family ranch south of Oshkosh. Shirley worked for the Garden County School Superintendent, the Garden County News, and the Garden County Treasurer. She loved to sew and made every dress she ever wore. She liked to garden and grow flowers and was proud to serve meals that were totally home grown.

Shirley was a lifelong and faithful member of the Lutheran church. She volunteered for the Friends of the Library and the Oshkosh museum. She enjoyed spending time with family, crafts, reading, family history, and traveling.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Worth, Wayne (Beth) and Ellis (Donna) Saunders.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Vernon, children David (Shari), Barbara, and Michael (LaVonne) Bartling, grandchildren Brent, Jennifer, Sarah, Christian, and Thomas Bartling, great-grandchildren Brooke (Travis) Evenden, and Jacy Bartling, and great-great grandsons Grayson and Levi Evenden, sisters-in-law Lou Koenig, Doris (Ray) Walker and Mary Lou Bartling, brothers-in-law Marvin (Ruth) Bartling and Gary (Maria) Bartling, step-granddaughter Melissa Baca and her sons Mitchell and Rolin, and many nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors.
