Viola Kriesel

June 10, 1921 — October 23, 2013

Viola Kriesel (Mrs. Fred), 92 a longtime resident of Gurley, Nebraska went to be with her Lord on Wednesday afternoon, October 23, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Sidney, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 28, 2013 at 10:00 AM in the Trinity site of the United Church of the Plains in Dalton, Nebraska with Pastor Eric Alm and Pastor Leon “Bud” Gillespie officiating. Burial will follow in the Dalton Cemetery.


Visitation will be on Sunday, October 27 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney with the family present.


Memorials can be made to the United Church of the Plains or Sullivan Hills Camp Facility.

Viola was born on a farm west of Reynolds, NE to Frank F. and Rachel Sawyer Haase on June 10, 1921. She attended schools there, except for six years at Harrison, NE. She graduated in 1938 from Reynolds High school. Viola was baptized in the Methodist Church there, where she remained a faithful member until 1940 when she moved with her husband Fred to the farm west of Gurley, NE.

Viola married Fred Kriesel, July 2, 1939. To this union five children were born; Jean Clara, Ronald Frederick, Galen John, Jane Ellen and Leon Thomas Kriesel. They lived on the farm until June, 1978 when they moved into their new home in Gurley. They were married 60 years when he died in 1999. Viola loved her family and home and enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening.

Viola loved her Lord and was always active in her church as Sunday School teacher and superintendent and held many offices in the women’s groups. She was also active in the Extension Club and a 4-H leader for many years. Viola belonged to the Gurley-Dalton Garden Club and was also on the school committee when Gurley and Dalton became Leyton. A former member of the Hi-Plains Art Council, she made numerous Church banners for the worship center.


Viola was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter-Jean Clara, infant grandson, husband Fred, son Galen John and nine brothers and two sisters.

Left in mourning are; son Ron and wife Jeanne of Portland, OR, Galen’s wife Marcia of Tehachapi, CA, daughter Jane Allen of Hartford, CT, son Leon and wife Cheryl of Gurley, NE, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Holechek Funeral Home and Cremations in Sidney is serving the Kriesel family.
