Calvin James Shandy, 70, of Lewellen, passed away at the Ogallala Community Hospital in Ogallala on Friday afternoon, November 1, 2013.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 7, 2013 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh with Pastor Ray Weinerman officiating.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established in Calvin’s name to the Western Nebraska VOA in Lewellen.

Calvin James Shandy was born on November 14, 1942 in Syracuse, Kansas to Wesley and Lena May (Blood) Shandy. The family moved to Colorado and Calvin graduated from Golden High School.

On August 5, 1967 he was united in marriage to Mary Sue Baugher in Wakeeney, Kansas. Their daughter, Suzanne joined the family on September 3, 1968. The family lived in Golden and Brighton where Calvin worked as an electrician. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

In September 1986 Calvin and Mary retired to Lewellen. He loved Lewellen and all of Western Nebraska. He was an avid fisherman and goose hunter. He enjoyed both organizing and participating in hunting and fishing tournaments. He was a conservationist at the nearby refuge. He was a people person who never knew a stranger.

He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne and husband, Jeff Cassidy of Wichita, Kansas; grandson, Troy Cassidy of Wichita; 3 brothers, David and wife, Jeanne Shandy of Alaska, John Shandy of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Darrell Shandy of Alaska; sister in law, Peggy Westervelt of Wichita; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001 and his parents.
