Alice E. Higgins

Alice Higgins, 101 of Chappell, Nebraska died Friday morning, November 22, 2013 at the Miller Memorial Care Center in Chappell.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, December 5, 2013 in the Chappell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ezekiel Koech and Pastor Rod Wright officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Chappell Cemetery.

A Memorial has been established.

Alice Elizabeth (Lehn) Higgins daughter of John and Emma (Petz) Lehn was born Jan 1st, 1912 at Mt Clair near Nelson Nebraska. She attended school at Mt Clair until 1928 when she moved with her parents and family to Chappell, NE. She attended Deuel County High School where she received her teacher’s certificate in normal training. She taught in District 24 at that time for 2 years.


On February 18, 1934 she was united in marriage to Alvin Higgins. They moved into the home where she lived until 2008. To this Union one son Michael John was born. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for 80 plus years. She worked in the school cafeteria for 24 years where she really enjoyed the teachers and students. Worked at the Miller Memorial Rest Home for 14 years, retiring when she felt it was time to give up working. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandsons Shane and Tyler. She was a member of a bible study group which was a great inspiration to her. Read the bible each morning, also the Daily Guild Post which was a gift from a dear friend Claudia Vogt for many years. In 1993 she received the Good Neighbor Award and Crowned Deuel County Queen in 2006. She loved working in her yard, always had a garden which she enjoyed by sharing the harvest.


Preceding her in death was here parents, her husband of 36 years, her brothers Lawrence and Leonard, a sister Laura Terry Cole, sister in laws Ruth Lehn, Iva Joy Johnson, and Betty Lehn.


She is survived by her son Michael and wife Monica of Palm Desert, CA. Grandson Shane and significant other Sara of Evergreen, CO. Grandson Tyler of Palm Desert, CA, and great grandson Calvin. Sister Neva Schmid of Chappell,NE Special niece Sharlene Withers of Sidney, NE and many more nieces and nephews.
