Clara May McConkey

Clara May McConkey, 89, of Oshkosh passed away early Sunday morning, February 9, 2014 at the Garden County Health Services Nursing Home in Oshkosh. She would have turned 90 in just eight days.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 14, 2014 at the Oshkosh Wesleyan Church with Pastor Lynn Lutz officiating. Burial will follow in the Antelope Valley Cemetery near Oshkosh where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh.

A memorial has been established in Clara May’s name to the Garden County Historical Society.

Holechek Funeral Homes and Cremations is serving the McConkey family.

Clara May McConkey was born February 17, 1924 in Oshkosh Ne. the daughter of Jesse Floyd and Nellie Fern (Atkinson) Cooper. She attended school at the Lost Creek School and completed the 12th grade.

She married Norman Carson McConkey on December 23rd, 1943 and to this union 3 children was born, William Floyd, Dennis Lee and Rodney Leroy.

For many years Norman and Clara May live and worked on the Eldred Ranch north of Lisco. Around 1966 Norman and Clara May moved to Oshkosh and she began working at Marshall Town. She was very active in the VFW auxiliary and served as President for many years. She was an avid scrapbook collector of Garden County History and Genealogy. She spent a lot of time working to preserve the Antelope Valley Church, it was a passion as she dearly loved that church. She was a regular at the senior center in Oshkosh until her health stopped her from getting out when the weather was bad.

Pallbearers will be; Jesse McConkey, Levi McConkey, Zzyzx Brown, Johnny Lee Cooper, Matt McConkey and Beau Thelander.

She is survived by her sons: William “Bill” McConkey of Gering NE, Rod (Jacki) McConkey of Arthur NE., Grandchildren: Rhona Blake of Lisco NE., Lisa Brown Gering NE., Nancy (Brad) Schilz of Lincoln NE., Jesse (Jeri) McConkey of Mitchell NE. and Levi McConkey of Gering, NE., Great Grandchildren: Crystal (Beau) Thelander of Lewellen NE., Leah Seymour of Lisco NE., Emma McNally of Cheyenne WY., Zzyzx (Adrian) Brown of Gering, NE., Hannah Schilz of Lincoln NE., Ryder Ross of Mitchell NE. and Gavin McConkey of Gering, NE.: Great-Great Grandchildren: Hailee Thelander of Lewellen NE., Dirk and Emey Elliott of Gering, and Aedan McNally of Cheyenne WY. Daughter-in-law, Carolyn McConkey of Scottsbluff, Ne. Brothers: Virgil “Boze” (Rosie) Cooper of Oshkosh NE., Donald Lee Cooper of Manhattan KS.: Sisters: Alice (Cooper) Dewitt of Oshkosh NE., Rosanna (Cooper) Nass of Chappell NE.: Sister-in-law Alice Faye Cooper of Columbus KS. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman, son Dennis, daughter-in-law Kay McConkey and grandson Todd McConkey. Brothers: Robert “John” Cooper, George “Coop” Cooper, Sister: Violet “Sis” (Cooper) McCabe.
