Gertrude Elizabeth (Dowson) Archer, 92, of Oshkosh, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, February 11, 2014 at the Garden County Nursing Home in Oshkosh.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2014 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh with Rev. Lynn Lutz officiating. Burial will follow in the Oshkosh City Cemetery.

Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established in Gertie’s name to the Oshkosh Wesleyan Church.

Gertrude, the eldest of seven children, was born in Garden County on the family ranch near Rackett on May 17, 1921 to Earl and Minnie (Maxwell) Dowson. When Gertrude and brother, Marvin, became of school age the family moved to Ashby, Ne. and stayed there until Gertrude was ready for high school. The family moved to Oshkosh where Gertrude went to high school for 3 years. She graduated her senior year at The Emanuel Missionary High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

After graduation Gertie returned to the Ashby and Oshkosh areas where she worked for farm families as a cook and general helper. It was while she was working for the Morris Guenin family south of Oshkosh that she met Guy Archer from Chappell, they were married in 1943. To this union three daughters were born; Judith, Mariann, and Leslie.

Guy and Gertie moved to Oshkosh in the 1960’s when Guy retired from farming because of his health. Gertie worked at Midwec for many years after that. In earlier years she worked for Virginia Smith and at Carr’s Café in Chappell. She worked at Dunn’s turkey farm near Lisco and in the Lisco Grade School Cafeteria.

She was a member of the Oshkosh Wesleyan Church and served on the board for many years. She was active in the Oshkosh Garden Club, the Camera Club and the Art Club. She had many admire her pretty garden of flowers over the years. She was a poet and had some of her work published as well as some of her photography. She was an excellent cook; her pies were her specialty, sought after by family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, painting, traveling, family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Judith and husband, Leo Porter, Sr. of Oshkosh, Ne., Mariann and husband, Tom Emerson of Whitman, Ne., and Leslie and husband, Steve Morehead of Gering, Ne. Seven grandchildren, Leo Porter, Jr., Lorri (Porter) and husband, Steve Miessler, Lisa (Porter) and husband, Gene Mason, Brad Emerson, Thad and wife, June Emerson, Tracy Blain and Natalie Blain. Eight great grandchildren, Isaac Porter, Devon, Christopher and Gene III Mason, Brittney and Jaden Emerson, and Austin and Aiden Argo. Sister, Irene Richter of Sioux Falls, SD and a brother, Dean Dowson of Hershey, Ne. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Guy Archer, 3 brothers, Marvin, Lewis, and Dale Dowson, and one sister, Ida Mae Brott.
