Leon Hanson, 91 of Chappell, Nebraska passed away Sunday afternoon, December 6, 2015 at the Sedgwick County Hospital in Julesburg, Colorado.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, December 12, 2015 in the Chappell Assembly of God Church with Pastor Rich Graeff officiating. Services will conclude at the church with military honors.

Cremation has taken place and there is no visitation at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Leon Curtis Hanson, the son of Gilbert and Bertha A. (Jenson) Hanson was born December 9, 1923 in Grand Lake Township, Minnesota. He attended grade school in Becker County, Minnesota and graduated on July 1, 1938. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Northwest School of Agriculture in 1940.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 13, 1943. He served in WW II as an aviation machinist and was awarded the Victory, American Theatre and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons. Leon was discharged on May 11, 1946.

He returned to farming on the family Homestead near Rochert, Minnesota and worked for Snappy Tools. This farm was purchased by the government for the Tamarac refuge. In 1958 he purchased and moved his family to a farm near Height of Land Lake, Minnesota. In the 1960’s he started his own business, Height of Land Heating and Plumbing. His brother Jerry joined his in the business. After selling the business to his brother, Leon went to work for Lutheran Home & Society Hospital in Sterling, Colorado until his retirement.

Leon married Dorothy Marie Honcik on June 11, 1950 in Lake Park, Minnesota. They resided on the homestead farm near Rochert, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with four children: Lyle, Ann, Mark and Bruce. Dorothy passed away on December 17, 1965.

Leon married Dorothy Mae Rennewanz on January 8, 1968. From this union two children were added to the family: Linda and Aldean. The family moved from Minnesota in 1970 to Peetz, Colorado. After retirement Leon and Dorothy moved to Oregon and California and enjoyed traveling. They settled in Chappell, Nebraska in 2000.

Leon was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1676., attended the Assembly of God Church and enjoyed woodworking, camping and spending time with his family. Leon was proud of his service to our country and shared many stories of the war with anyone who would listen.

Preceding his in death were his parents, wife’s Dorothy Marie and Dorothy Mae, grandson Michael Thomas Hanson and brother Ray Hanson.

Survivors include: Ann (Doug) Mick of Chappell, NE, Mark (Dana) Hanson of Ft. Morgan, CO, Lyle Hanson and Bruce Hanson both of Sterling, CO, Linda (Carl) Roelle of Peetz, CO, Aldean Rennewanz of Julesburg, CO, one brother Jerry (Wilma) Hanson of Frazee, MN, 12 Grandchildren: Terasa (Jason) Farlin, Justin (Bev) Mick, Tonya Hanson, Melissa (Jacob) Dalrymple, Jeffrey Hanson, Adam Hanson, Donnell (Lori) Roelle, Derick (Melissa) Roelle, Jessica (David) Roelle, Nicki (Toby) Reeves, Dani Smith, and Melody Rennewanz, 15 Great-grandchildren, 1 Great, great-grandchild and his faithful pug Sandy.
