Bernetha Joyce (Curry) Groves was born on June 25, 1918, near Belleville, Kansas to Pearl and Minnie (George) Curry. The family moved to a ranch south of Ashby when she was nine months old. She received her schooling in Grant and Garden County and graduated from Garden County High School in 1936.

She married Leonard Groves on April 16, 1938 in Alliance, Nebraska. They made their home on the family ranch in the Rackett community northeast of Oshkosh. To this union four children were born: Bernard, Alice (who died in infancy), Duane, and Bonnie.

She loved life on the ranch and enjoyed having company, family reunions, cooking, painting, playing cards, and dancing. An active member of the Nimble Fingers Club since 1939, she was always happy to assist in whatever projects the club undertook. Bernetha and Leonard enjoyed fishing and camping and spent some winters near Buchanan Dam, Texas.

They retired from ranching and moved to Oshkosh in 1989. Bernetha was a volunteer at the Oshkosh Senior Center and spent lots of time being a hostess. In 2010, she moved to the Assisted Living Center in Lewellen and later moved into the Oshkosh Nursing Home when the assisted living facility closed.

She is survived by her son, Duane and wife, Annette of Hill City, SD; daughter, Bonnie and husband, Van Newell of Tekamah, NE; grandchildren, Chancy (Leasy) of Ashby, Mary Lou (Lane) of Greeley, CO, Steve (Nancy) of Littleton, CO, Doug (April) of Pagosa Springs, CO, Newell girls of Tekamah and step granddaughter, Tammy Mahoney of Hill City; great grandchildren, Tana (Cody), Taryn, Brady, Maya and Olivia, and Trenton; one great-great grandson, Rhett and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
