Larry Richard Kenney was born March 21st, 1942 to Earl and Frances Kenney. Raised in Chappell, NE; Larry attended Chappell High School where he participated in track, basketball, and football. He graduated in May of 1960 and later the following year, married Judy Hughes, his high school sweetheart.
The couple moved to Julesburg, CO where they completed their family with 3 children, Kory, Laurie, and Kari. During their time in Julesburg, Larry began his lifelong automotive career. He worked every job in the industry, from pumping gas at a filling station, to mechanic, and eventually his career led him to a job as a car salesman with Kripal Motor Company in Chappell. Larry had a love for all things auto and could diagnose and fix just about anything. He passed this love on to his son and grandsons alike. He retired from the industry in 2002, after more than 40 years.
Retirement didn’t find Larry with any unused free time, as he was always in the middle of a million projects. He was a master of many crafts, although if you asked him he would say he was a “jack of all trades, master of none.” He was a skilled carpenter and artist, he enjoyed woodworking, painting, anything that involved working with his hands. He could build, fix, and create anything.
Larry was a family man who took a great deal of pride in his community as well, and after retirement he served on the Deuel County Board of Commissioners. He was an educated, well spoken, well respected member of the community. He was an advocate for the underdogs, quick to lend a hand to anyone in need without being asked, and instilled in his children and grandchildren a solid foundation of integrity.
Larry entered into rest on December 19th, 2017 surrounded by his family. He will be remembered always, thought of often, and will continue to live on through his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Kenney; sister Katherine (Everett) White; children Kory (Maria), Laurie (Rick) Dale, Kari Hixon; grandchildren Candace Hatfield, Jordan Dale, Tyler Dale, Logan Hixon, Connor Hixon; and two great grandchildren Brynn and Jemi McBride aka “Gargoyles.”
Larry is preceded in death by his parents Earl and Frances (Barry) Kenney; brothers Jim and Earl Jr. (Jap) Kenney; sisters Elaine Wright and Marlene Disney; and grandson Chance Hatfield.
