He attended District 68, a one-room schoolhouse from k-2, north of Oshkosh, which is now part of the family ranch. He then attended school in Oshkosh and graduated from Garden County High School in 1981. He started his first business in 1977 when he and Scott Smith were given a dollar to take up the game cleaning business from Pete Peterson and Glen Vincent. The business brought in customers not knowing that they would turn into dear lifelong friends. Which, also made Big Al’s pickin barn a well-known attraction in Oshkosh, Ne. After graduating, he purchased his first backhoe, which started his excavation business. He later expanded with sand/gravel and redimix. In addition to this he was a vital part of the family ranch Lake Cattle Co LLC.

He married Andrea (Mendoza) Lake on May 29, 1993. To this union two children were born: son, Noah and daughter, Maddie. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping, and trapping. He took great pride in smoking meat for the hometown 4th of July celebration. He loved to entertain/host family and friends and is known for the Superbowl and New Year’s Eve parties. He always found a reason to celebrate and throw a party! He was a member of the North Platte Valley Sportsman Club.
