She was raised on the family farm north of Potter and spent her elementary school years in a one room country school which had no electricity or modern plumbing. Her family-moved into Potter in the early 50's where she attended high school and graduated from the Potter Public Schools. Following her graduation from high school she attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska for two years where she was enrolled in a pre-nursing program. Upon completion of those two years she entered a three-year nurses training program at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. After completing these two programs she passed her state boards and became a registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Gail then returned to Western Nebraska where she and Jerry Dykman were united in marriage on September 22, 1963. They made their home in Sidney, Nebraska. During the early years of their marriage Gail worked as an office nurse, a surgical nurse, a mental health nurse, and a general duty nurse. During this period of time Gail was a member of the American Nurses Association, the Nebraska Nurses Association, and helped to start the Sidney Nurses Association where she served a term as president.

One daughter, Brooke, was born to Jerry & Gail in 1972. After the birth of her daughter Gail became a stay at home mother and a full time homemaker which she enjoyed immensely.

In addition to her enjoyment of the responsibilities of motherhood and homemaking, Gail enjoyed gardening, knitting, quilting, book clubs, Bible studies, the Cheyenne County Art Guild and her cat pets. She especially cherished time spent with family & friends. Her life was enriched in her later years by helping out at the WNCC library for a couple of years and also filling 'the gap' at the Holechek Funeral Home when needed.
