Eugene Raymond Schmid was born on September 20, 1937 on the family farm in rural Garden County to Raymond and Erma (Dormann) Schmid. He grew up on the farm and attended country schools. He graduated from Chappell High School in 1955.

On December 31, 1961, Gene was united in marriage to Dee Anna Newell at the old United Methodist Church in Oshkosh. They were married for 56 years. He and Dee Anna spent some time working on the Hartman Ranch. Soon after, Gene and Dee Anna purchased the Clopine Farm southwest of Oshkosh where they farmed and ranched for 40 plus years. Gene worked at Oshkosh Livestock and the sale barns in Chappell and Ogallala. He served many years on the rural fire department and over 30 years on the FSA County Committee. For 28 years, Gene especially enjoyed haying the meadow south of Oshkosh. In 2003, Gene and Dee Anna moved into Oshkosh, and he continued to work part time on the family farm with his son, Dan, and the Ogallala Livestock Auction. In June 2016, failing health required Gene to move into the nursing home where he was still the life of the party.

Gene will be fondly remembered for the love of his cattle, horses, and being a good steward of the land. He loved playing cards, especially pitch. He enjoyed watching his children’s and grandchildren’s sports, brandings, and football. He held a special place in his heart for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Throughout his life, he showed his family an exemplary work ethic. His mischievous grin touched many lives.

Gene is survived by his wife Dee Anna of Oshkosh; 3 children--Greg (Kathy) Schmid of Scottsbluff, Pam (Larry) Yates of Chadron, and Dan (Michelle) Schmid of Oshkosh; 7 grandchildren--Tera (Colby) Segelke, Kaila (Eddie) Sabala, Jacob (Jada Huck) Schmid, Brittney (Andy) Gooder, Amber (Jade) Clement, and Sami and Eli Schmid; 6 great-grandchildren--Griffin, Stella, Eddie Jr., Tristan, Tenley, and Treyson; 2 step-grandchildren--Colleen (Jeremy) Brady and Stacey Murdock; step-great-granddaughter--Kaylee Murdock; sister--Lana (Tim) Olson; sisters-in-law--June Mikolyck and Alice Lee Paterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister--Alice Faye, and 2 brothers--Billy and Bruce.
