Oshkosh, Nebraska

Joan Allen, 89, of Oshkosh passed away Friday, April 25, 2025 at the Garden County Health Services Hospital in Oshkosh surrounded by her family.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at the Oshkosh City Cemetery with Pastor Kerry Johnson officiating.

Memorials in Joan’s name can be made to the family for later designation.

Joan Louise Stromer was born October 21, 1935 in Hastings, Nebraska to Alvin and Helen (Holbrock) Stromer. She attended schools in Juniata and graduated from Juniata High.

After high school, she moved to Ogallala for work and was introduced to Bruce Frye. They were married on December 21, 1956. To this union, 4 children were born: Diane, Kathy, Barry, Jim. The couple later divorced.

She worked at US Aprons in Ogallala among other places. While working at the Northshore Lodge she met Harold Allen. They were married October 9, 1999 in Lewellen. They enjoyed blending their lives and families together.

Joan was a member of the Oshkosh Methodist Church and the OES Eastern Star. She will be fondly remembered for the many funeral dinners she helped prepare and serve.

Playing cards was an extremely important part of her life. She was in several groups of friends playing cards. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and was an excellent seamstress, making lots of her children’s clothing and blankets for her family. Her family was her first priority, and she was always there for them whenever she was needed.

She is survived by her children; Diane (Pat) Thelander of Oshkosh, Kathy Leach of Interior, South Dakota, Barry (Karen) of Ogallala, Jim Frye of Kearney; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her first husband, Bruce, husband, Harold, parents, brother, Darrell Stromer, daughter-in-law, Becky Frye.
