Larry, affectionately known as “L.A.,” was born February 5, 1965, in Sidney to Ken and Judy Alexander. Because his father worked in the oil fields, Larry spent his childhood living in several places, including Potter, Gillette, Wyoming, Long Beach, California, and Lima, Peru. One of his greatest childhood adventures was spending 10 days in the Amazon jungle with his father while he worked there.
The family returned to Potter in 1979, and in 1982 his parents purchased Ron’s Bar, renaming it The Golden Mug. Larry graduated from Potter High School in 1983 and attended college in Rapid City while returning home on weekends to bartend and cook at The Mug.
Larry worked at Prestolite Wire Company for many years, eventually becoming a Wire Sales Representative, before beginning a career with Case IH, now Titan Machinery, in 2008. He recently earned a promotion to Parts Manager and was looking forward to beginning his new position. He treasured the friendships he made throughout his career and will be greatly missed by his customers and coworkers.
Larry was an avid bowler and golfer, and some of his most lasting friendships were made through the sports he loved. He was also a dedicated family man who could always be counted on to prepare holiday dinners, make his broccoli or fruit salad, and bring plenty of laughter to family gatherings.
He was famous for his competitive spirit during Rummikub, laying his tiles backward and quickly accusing everyone of cheating the moment they started beating him. One family favorite was the time he cooked a prime rib that developed a complete hard shell around it. Despite its questionable appearance, it turned out to be the best-tasting prime rib the family had ever had—a story that perfectly captured Larry’s ability to turn ordinary moments into unforgettable memories.
Larry was an integral part of his nephews Reid and Trever’s lives, serving as a role model, mentor, and rock they could always count on. He shared a special bond with his sister Jana and was always ready for a weekend adventure with her—whether gambling, searching for material for a DIY project, going to dinner, or simply getting out of town.
Larry will be remembered for his generous heart, quick wit, loyalty, humor, and the many friendships and memories he created throughout his life. He had a way of making people feel welcome and loved, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Larry is survived by his sister, Jana Tarrell and her husband, Ev; nephew Reid Doyle, his wife Jennifer, and their children Kai and Kenni; nephew Trever Tarrell; brother Mike Summers and his wife, Chris; niece Alyssa and her children Ava, Elias, and Nalani; and nephew Tyler Summers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Judy Alexander; his brother, Marvin Summers; and his best friend, Jeff Jung, who passed away almost exactly one year ago.
Larry leaves behind a lifetime of laughter, friendships, family traditions, and stories that will be told for years to come. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
